In a recent study, it was found that 73 per cent of the cancer patients shared the second opinion they received from TMC NCG Navya to their primary treating oncologists and 78 percent of cancer patients received treatments recommended by TMC NCG Navya.
The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) and Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) and National Cancer Grid (NCG) have together brought forward an initiative called the TMC NCG Navya. It is an online platform to provide a second opinion on the health of cancer patients.
In a recent study, it was found that 73 per cent of the cancer patients shared the second opinion they received from TMC NCG Navya to their primary treating oncologists and 78 per cent of cancer patients received treatments recommended by TMC NCG Navya. This study was presented at the 2017 American Society of Clinical Oncology.
“We found that 73 per cent patients shared the expert opinion reports with their primary doctors. It is a considerably significant number, because usually in patients in India are hesitant to share second opinions with their primary doctors. It is because they are anxious of hurting their doctor credibility.
Since its creation in 2014, 10,779 patients from 46 countries upload their disease record on TMC/TMH/NCG Navya online. The website has 90 experts from all over the world who provide valuable advice within 24 hours.
The TMC NCG Navya has been received a huge response and it has helped a lot of patients in terms of getting a correct diagnosis, as informed by Dr Pramesh. “The online expert opinion service is a game changer where the demand for cancer expertise far outstrips supplies, by democratising access. This has enabled proliferation of standardised evidence based treatment recommendations for patients who lack the access to tertiary care centres and thereby expertise,” said Dr Pramesh.
The study included 914 patients who registered with the service between July 2016 and March 2017. Over a year before Navya project got affiliated to National Cancer Grid funded by the government of India and which has 108 cancer centres across India.
